Spend a morning exploring the ruins of enigmatic ancient Corinth on this half-day trip from Athens. Drive west from the capital along the breathtaking coastal road, with views over olive trees to the sparkling Saronic Gulf. Pass the famous beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, popular summer spots for Athenians looking to escape the city and take a dip in the crystal-clear waters.
Our first stop gives you a chance to look down into the dizzying Corinth Canal. Watch the ships make their way down the narrow blue channel, cut through the isthmus to connect the Aegean and Ionian seas a century ago. After a short break here we’ll drive on to Ancient Corinth, a city-state built at the meeting place between northern and southern Greece. Hear the famous myth of the arrogant Corinthian King Jason and his sorceress queen, Medea, whose bitter conflict led to a violent end. Learn about the real historical figure St Paul the Apostle, who lived here for two years spreading the Gospel of Christ. Explore the fascinating remains of the city, including the Agora, the market place which formed the hub of daily life in the ancient polis. Visit alsothe sixth century BCTemple of Apollo to discover something of the wealth and political importance of Corinth in ancient times.
On our way home to Athens we’ll call in at the tiny port of Kechries. Now a calm azure cove where lizards bask on the marble ruins, this was once a bustling port where St. Paul disembarked. We return to Athens in time for lunch.
